Many people find that the loveable Pug is the perfect breed for them. Their inquisitive nature means that they want to be part of every activity.
While they have the stamina to go all day long, they were originally bred to be a lap dog. In fact, their favorite place is right on your lap, so if you don’t want to be covered in dog hair constantly, then this might not be the right breed for you!
While you will try very hard in the beginning to set boundaries, their cute face will win you over. Soon, you will discover that your Pug has claimed your sofa, favorite chair, bed and much more leaving everything covered in dog hair.
Sure, there are things that you can do to minimize the amount of dog hair your Pug leaves around the house, but you can’t eliminate it completely
Do Pugs Shed?
We insinuated it above, but to answer the question more directly, yes Pugs shed. In fact, most pugs shed a tremendous amount of hair on an ongoing basis.
The more common fawn Pug with its adorable black face has a double coat. Fawn-colored Pugs have a soft undercoat that you will love to stroke because it feels like velvet against your hands. This short coat, however, is why the Pug sheds so much. As the coat grows, it pushes the longer silky top coat out of the way. The top coat then ends up shedding and spreading everywhere in your home.
The black Pug is highly desirable for people who do not want to be cleaning dog hair off their furniture, carpets, and clothes all day long. Black Pugs do not have the undercoat, so there is nothing to push the longer topcoat out of the way making it easier for you to stay dog-hair free for longer.
How Much Do Pugs Shed?
Most fawn, red and silver Pugs shed a lot while black Pugs shed very little. Many breeds of dogs only shed in the spring, however, the Pug sheds throughout the year.
Many Pug owners wonder how that amount of hair comes from a dog who veterinarians say should only weigh about 20 pounds! Of course, many Pugs weigh much more because they know how to beg for food from their owners who cannot resist their adorable antics.
What Are Some Tips for Managing Pug Hair?
There are some things that you can do to try to control the amount of dog hair found around your home.
The first thing is to brush your dog on a daily basis. Make sure that you brush your dog on a grooming mat or on a surface that is easy to clean or you will be cleaning up lots of dog hair after you complete the job. Brushing, however, helps because it takes out most of the loose hair before it falls out on your furniture or lap.
The second thing that you can do is to bathe your dog weekly. You will probably both love this time because your Pug will show off for you while in the tub causing you to laugh. Since you will be bathing your dog frequently, make sure to use a shampoo that will not dry out their skin.
Many veterinarians recommend adding fish oil to your dog’s food can help with excess shedding. Just break a capsule open and pour it over their food. Otherwise, you can find a high-quality dog food that already has fish oil in it.
You may also want to think about getting your Pug an adorable outfit or two as this will allow the hair to fall out inside the outfit. Be careful, however, when taking the outfit off after a long day or you may end up with a mouthful of dog hair.
Wrap
If you are thinking of getting a Pug, or already have one, then the best thing you can do is to invest in a good vacuum cleaner with attachments allowing you to clean furniture. You can count on needing to use it almost every day to take care of the Pug hair laying around your home!
